Sammanfattning
The article argues on the basis of experience in favour of more research into the working conditions and managerial responsibilities of ward sisters. Among other things because the nursing profession has a strong sense of self-knowledge and expectations of equality, co-determination and care, which can make it difficult for leading nurses to assert their authority. Similarly, ward sisters can be tempted to allow the nursing profession to stand out, to the cost of their professional leadership. In the author's experience, the many conflicting demands made on ward sisters result in a high degree of personal investment in their role, which in turn can result in a disturbing amount of evaluation work and with it, stress.
The article describes specific examples of this evaluation work and recommends support being given to ward sisters, among other things a management development process in which professionalisation of the leading role is legitimated and allowance made for a healthy balance between working life and leisure time.
