Sammanfattning
A small scale qualitative interview survey of nurses' attitudes to patients with an alcohol problem shows that nurses hold many conflicting views about these patients. On the one hand, the nurses claimed to be well disposed towards patients with an alcohol problem, while on the other they expressed attitudes which ostensibly can be offensive to patients and result at worst in objection to treatment.
The survey, which was carried out in early 2006, was implemented in the framework of a qualitative research interview based on a phenomenological-hermeneutic reference frame.
Interviews were carried out with five nurses on a surgical ward at a hospital in Jutland.
Approx. 17,000 Danes are admitted every year to somatic departments with an alcohol-related diagnosis, and nurses therefore encounter patients with alcohol problems throughout the hospital system. Discussion about nurses' attitudes to these patients is decisive to the quality of the nursing patients are offered, and the object of this article is to encourage such discussion.
