Sammanfattning
When a chronic respirator user becomes a patient the staff must be able to handle a respirator. The patient is often accompanied by his or her personal helper. The respiration centres in Denmark are responsible for the set-up and follow-up of respirator treatment. If the need arises for admission, this will be to the local hospital.
Patients have lived with their respiratory disabilities for many years and are experts in their own situations. They always have a helper by their side who they often have helped to train themselves in cooperation with one of the two Restoration centres in Denmark. The helper takes care of all the patient's nursing needs when the patient is in his/her habitual respiratory condition.
The nurse must therefore observe and care for the patient, just like any other patient, for what he/she was admitted for. Collaboration between the patient, helper and nursing staff is vital, and it is necessary to be familiar with the helper's responsibilities and competencies.
When a respirator user becomes a patient, the nurse must inform the patient and his/her helper of the practical conditions on the ward so that the patient becomes self-helped together with his helper as soon as possible.
