The article is based on experiences at the Paediatric Department of Randers Regional Hospital and describes how the perception of freedom and quality of life is of great importance to diabetic children and their parents' ability to master creative treatment. New treatment methods and transparent treatment principles using insulin analogs or insulin pumps make for flexibility and freedom; now the diabetic can control the disease and not vice versa. The literature confirms that basal bolus treatment is suitable and safe for children, although no studies confirm our experience that a perception of freedom and quality of life promote the ability to master. The families' many positive experiences and descriptions of every day life and quality of life guided the development of our diabetic team. As a result, the families have had a far better understanding and take responsibility for the treatment of their diabetic child, which in turn has led to markedly improved metabolic control.
