The advantage of nylon dentures compared with conventional PMMA dentures is improved patient comfort due to its flexibility, less bulky design, lower weight, and improved aesthetics. The main disadvantage is that the gingival margins are covered by the denture base, thereby increasing the tendency to aggregate plaque with possible consequences in terms of caries and periodontal disease. Furthermore, because the denture does not have adequately functioning rests, accelerated ridge resorption seems likely. Nylon dentures should therefore only be used as a temporary restoration pending a permanent restoration, or for patients with remaining dentition where total extraction is planned shortly, for instance in the elderly, in order to facilitate adaptation to a future complete denture.
