Sammanfattning

Many patients with chronic diseases are cared for in their homes by relatives, friends or other non-professional caregivers in an informal and unpaid support system. This often means a psychological, physical, emotional, social, and economic strain. These caregivers (CGs) often have more depression, low-spiritedness, and impaired quality of life. A recent study of four hundred relatives of Parkinson patients showed that insufficient sleep, perceived stress, daytime sleepiness, and depression were common and often dependent of the duration of caregiving, which coincided with the duration of disease. The CGs assessed their own health as relatively good, irrespective of the duration of caregiving. The CGs capacity of caregiving seems to be an important factor regarding the risk of institutionalisation. The help and care of the chronically ill patient may disorganize family life and alter the established balance within the family and decrease the lifespace of CGs. Thus, society should consider the roll of CGs when planning for care and treatment of patients with chronic diseases.
