Sammanfattning

The European Randomised Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer reported recently that screening with prostate specific antigen (PSA) reduces prostate cancer mortality, but at the cost of substantial overdiagnosis and overtreatment. As a response to this report, the European Association of Urology (EAU) recommends that men should be informed about the possible advantages and negative effects of PSA-testing. It is, therefore, of interest to know how large proportion of men has knowledge about the PSA test and how many have been tested. We report on an Internet-based survey of 1,000 Swedish men, aged 50 years or more, who were enquired about these issues in June, 2009. The survey was initiated by GlaxoSmithKline and performed by Novus Opinion. Of the men, 85% knew about the PSA test, 57% knew how to obtain a test for prostate cancer, but only 36% were acquainted with possible negative effects of PSA testing. Almost half of the men (48%) had at least once had a PSA test. All these proportions were larger among elderly than younger men and among those with a friend or family member with prostate cancer. In conclusion, this survey showed that both the knowledge about and utilising of the PSA test is wide-spread in the middle-aged, male Swedish population.
