Sammanfattning

Delirium is a frequently occurring condition in hospitalized older patients, especially among those with fractures. Consequences of delirium are higher mortality, increased hospitalization and subsequent institutionalization. The purpose of this study was to investigate what typifies nurses' practical experiences related to the state of delirium in older people hospitalized for orthopedic surgery. Focus group interviews were implemented among 15 registered nurses in two orthopedic wards. The interviews were tape recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed qualitatively. The findings indicate challenges related to unpredictable surgery programs, insufficient knowledge and poor plans for older patients at risk of or having developed delirium. The study revealed a need for improving nursing practice to older patients with fractures in order to achieve services better suited for this group’. Knowledge that enables nurses to identify patients at risk of delirium and establish preventive measures needs increased focus.
