Sammanfattning

Sexual risk behaviour has increased substantially among Swedish youth in the last decade, with more sexual partners, a decline in risk awareness and condom use and frequent travel, resulting in higher incidences of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), unwanted teenage pregnancies and abortions. Only an estimated 5-15% of 15-24 year olds have been HIV-tested. Swedish youth clinics play an important role for the prevention of HIV and other STIs. We performed a simulated client study among 219 of the 270 existing youth clinics across Sweden in April 2010 to study attitudes towards, and access to, HIV-testing for youth. Only one quarter of the youth clinics recommended HIV-testing to a young woman claiming repeated unprotected intercourse with an unknown young man. The staff generally displayed poor awareness regarding HIV and focussed on traditional risk groups and the male partner rather than the woman’s own behaviour, indicating prejudices and gender stereotypic thinking.
