The author reports on the development of how society has regulated medical malpractice in Sweden from the creation of Collegium Medicum in 1663 till 2010. The number of malpractice cases has increased over time and is now over 4000 every year. The frequency disciplinary consequences has however decreased in relation to the number of cases. After the creation of a no fault compensation insurance in 1975 the responsibility and the compensation issues were separated and very few cases ended in court.
