Sammanfattning

More and more health agencies in Norway make use of patient hotels. This article describes a Norwegian internal patient hotel, where patients are offered some nursing care and medical treatment. The aims of the study were to map out what type of tasks nurses conduct in their work at a patient hotel, and, also, to investigate which groups of patients were admitted seen in relation to patient criteria. A quantitative survey was conducted amongst the nurses working at the unit. The results revealed that nursing work at the unit included many and various medical and caring tasks, and that nursing work was not a service-role only. Patients from several wards at the hospital were suited for a stay at the unit, but not all patients fulfilled all the patient criteria. The patients represented various medical and surgical areas of expertise. Medical treatment was combined with a focus on enhancing health and involving the patient’s own resources.
