Sammanfattning

Fear-of-childbirth counseling led by midwives is offered at Swedish obstetric hospitals as part of standard care. In a quality assessment survey one year after delivery, Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm asked 219 women who had undergone such counseling to anonymously complete a mail questionnaire that included an Impact of Event scale. The majority of women polled were satisfied with their counselling and delivery. Post-traumatic stress was associated with a negative birth experience, emergency cesarean section (CS), early motherhood, and limited education. Half of the women who had initially requested a CS had changed their minds. Still, the CS rate was 34%, compared to 23% for the department overall. Women who seek counseling for fear of childbirth seem vulnerable and require follow-up.
