Sammanfattning

We describe three cases of iodine-induced hyperthyroidism due to iodine contrast media. Treatment consists of anti-thyroid drugs, often in higher dosage than usual, and potassium perchlorate. In cases of resistance to medical therapy, thyroidectomy is an alternative. All cases had tumor disease with scheduled surgery and they also all had goiter, and two of them had known subclinical hyperthyroidism. Due to hyperthyroidism, tumor surgery was delayed two months in two of the cases. To reduce the risk of iodine-induced hyperthyroidism and the risk of delayed tumor surgery, we recommend that patients with known goiter and/or subclinical hyperthyroidism and tumor disease scheduled for iodine contrast media should be treated with a daily dose of methimazole 20 mg for two weeks starting the day before examination.
