Sammanfattning

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) usually causes a milder disease with less severe sequelae in children than in adults. Previous immunization recommendations in Sweden considered immunization for TBE as unnecessary for young children in endemic areas. However, severe cases of TBE also occur in children, and recent publications show that cognitive sequelae, such as memory difficulties or attention problems, after TBE infection possibly is more common than previously thought. There is no way to predict which individuals will be affected with severe symptoms or sequelae. Available vaccines are safe and effective from 1 year of age, and immunization should be considered in children from the age of 1 year. Individual advice on immunization against TBE should be based on an assessment of the individual’s risk of exposure to ticks in TBE-endemic areas.
