Sammanfattning

Terminal secretions produce an audible rattling respiration in the terminally ill and consciously impaired, which can arise in the last 48 hours of the patient's life. This little study examines whether suctioning in the upper part of the pharynx can reduce rattling and how patients and their families react to the use of suctioning. 18 patients were included, all of whom were admitted to Hospice Limfjord during the period 1 April 2013 to 1 April 2014. The rattling was assessed using the Victoria Respiratory Congestion Scale. The data material for the 18 patients shows that suctioning reduced congestion when it was used alone and that suctioning combined with changing the patient's position and Robinul prior to suctioning had an effect on the rattling noise, which was reduced in 72 percent of patients. Five of the 18 patients reacted to the suctioning, and it cannot be ruled out that some of these patients were bothered by the suctioning. All family members reacted positively to the suctioning. A single family member was both positive and negative. Overall, suctioning in the objective of reducing audible rattling is deemed to help family members be with the patient.
