Sammanfattning
Illness, adversity and misfortune are always present in the lives of human
beings and these must be handled, explained and solved in ways that are
socially and culturally meaningful. Diagnoses can be understood as ambiguous
classifications which change in relation to social situations and the cultural
and political contexts in which people are embedded. As anthropologists we
want to understand what these classifications mean, how they are enacted and
the consequences they have for people in different situations. In this article we
use two empirical examples based on ethnographic material from Kosovo and
Syria. These show the varied positions of experts in relation to classifications
of illness and adversity.
