Sammanfattning
Administration of medication on a clinical ward is still perceived as complex and time-
consuming. The purpose of the article is to describe the experience of nursing staff of involving
pharmacy staff in the process of administering medication. The description is based on focus group
interviews. The article is based on a regional project in which pharmaconomists were involved in
administration of medication to patients on four clinical wards in order to perform this task in an
interaction with the rest of the staff. A study of statements by nursing staff indicated that
pharmaconomists were seen as a sparring partner in the administration of medication and a vital
resource in terms of stimulating knowledge sharing on interactions, administration timing and routes.
In addition, the pharmaconomist assisted in keeping the ward's assortment of medication up-to-date
and maintained. The systematic approach of the pharmaconomists eliminated time wastage from
nursing work and freed up resources which were rechannelled to nursing and care tasks. In general,
there would seem to be positive potential in involving pharmaconomists in administration of
medication on clinical wards. However, this requires managerial openness to new work flows, and the
decision should be on a ward-specific basis.
