Sammanfattning
Introduction: Medical investigation is a highly topical issue in Denmark, since the Danish
Government recently has adopted a medical investigation warranty that applies to all patients. The
intention is to create equal practice and treatment in the country. Patients’ experiences of being in the
diagnostic phase, has received little attention in nursing research. That is what this study seeks to
elucidate. Method: The study uses a phenomenological, hermeneutical approach through four
qualitative interviews conducted in the infectious disease ward. The aim of the study is to increase
the understanding of patients in the diagnostic phase and thereby increase the quality of nursing
care. The data analysis was inspired by the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur. Findings: Throughout
the data analysis process, four main themes appeared: 1) The aspects of waiting, 2) To be in the
wrath of the fever, 3) The relational aspect, and 4) The good patient. Conclusion: The patients found
themselves in a waiting time characterized by uncertainty and unpredictability, in their need of
receiving a diagnosis. They had a hard time making demands of the health services which led to
experiences of being rejected. Also the findings suggest that the subjective experience of fever may
not be attached with great importance in nursing.
