Sammanfattning

Paediatric dentoalveolar surgery requires high competency in management of children and adolescents from all members of the dental team, including relevant odontological knowledge, extensive communication competencies, and a positive attitude to children and their parents. Competency in pain control and sedation are of paramount importance. Clinical procedures, including standard procedures for surgical hygiene, have to be modified to ensure the collaboration of the child. Parents have to be allowed to be present in the clinic, if they and the child want. A close cooperation between the operating dentist and the chair-side assistant is essential. Out of close to 400 dentoalveolar surgical interventions in children and adolescents performed in a large Danish municipal dental service in the school year 2010 to 2011, the most frequent were: denudation of permanent canines of the upper jaw, denudation of second permanent molars, removal of third molars, and removal of supernumerary teeth. In addition to these interventions, a number of less frequent interventions were carried out, involving soft tissues as well as bone and teeth. It is concluded that dentoalveolar surgical interventions in children and adolescents are relatively rare, and that they should be centralized in order to obtain sufficient volume.
