Sammanfattning
Guidelines of the Swedish Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggest screening for thyroid disease in early pregnancy in
accordance with some international guidelines. A recommendation to treat all pregnant women with an increase of serum TSH above the trimester
specific reference limit with levothyroxine is included. In a commentary on these guidelines from the authors, published in this issue of
Läkartidningen, a more cautious approach to this controversial standpoint is noticed. Until further experience is gained and the scientific problem
is resolved it is unjustified to implement a broad sceening procedure for thyroid disease in the Swedish maternity health system.
