Sammanfattning

Youyou Tu, a Chinese pharmacist, was awarded the Nobel Prize of 2015 for the discovery of artemisinin for treatment of malaria. Aremisinin is a sesquiterpene lactone containing a peroxide group. This compound is naturally occurring in sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua L.) which is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant. Artemisinin has a unique and complex mode of action, and today Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) is recommended by WHO for treatment of falciparum malaria. The discovery of artemisinin is a result of a goal-oriented project, and it has contributed to the saving of a lot of people’s lives.
