Sammanfattning

Microscopic hematuria is seen in 1-10% of adults and is equally common among asymptomatic patients with or without urologic disease. Thus, it is a poor laboratory test. With increasing age most men and women get symptoms from the urinary tract like urgency, frequency, nocturia and incontinence. Doctors should avoid to examine whether a patient has microscopic hematuria. Instead, focus should be on patients with visible hematuria or severe progressive symptoms, who should be examined with CT urography and cystoscopy as soon as possible.
