Sammanfattning
A good many people tell about the bad experiences they had from the time
they spent as pupils at Norwegian reformatories. Others, however, present
positive stories. This article presents a reading of public sources from an
archive from such a school. The material is discussed on the basis of Paul
Ricoeur’s theory on the function of narratives and Aaron Antonovsky’s theory
on salutogenesis. Despite a common empirical basis, the institutional and
individual narratives are at times substantially different from each other. The
key to an understanding of such differences can be found in the lives of the
individual narrators and how they have managed to use their experiences to
create a narrative identity
