Sammanfattning

This article illuminates patient experiences of participating in a theme-based group in a general psychiatric ward. Seven former patients were interviewed. Qualitative content analysis by Graneheim and Lundman was used. «Being in a relationship with themselves and others» stands out as the essence of the patients’ experiences. The findings indicate that the patients «recognized themselves in each other’s experiences», «experienced cohesion», «felt seen and appreciated», and «challenged themselves». A type of group therapy that creates a space where the patients can meet each other with engagement had significance for improving their mental health. Hospitalized patients with serious mental disorders can benefit from facilitated group therapy, such as theme-based groups.
