Sammanfattning
Future cohorts of older people, and especially women, will be much better educated than elderly today. This may lead to shifts in the mentality, values, preferences and competencies among future elderly. The aim of this paper is to elucidate mental health implications of increased education among tomorrow’s elderly. We highlight three psychological aspects that may change in future cohorts of elderly as a consequence of higher education: Sense of control, depressive symptoms and alcohol consumption. We use data from the large Norwegian study of Life-course, Ageing and Generation. The findings suggest that sense of control will be stronger, depressive symptoms will be less frequent, and alcohol consumption will be higher.
