Sammanfattning

Pneumococcal disease is a one of the most devastating but preventable diseases in childhood worldwide. General pneumococcal vaccination in infancy is very effective but the implementation in Sweden was not simple. Professor Hans Rosling took an active role in informing the public about the pneumococcal vaccine. In debates he made topical the responsibility for the medical profession to informing parents about effective and available vaccines, also those payable outside the national vaccination program, so that the parents/children could make their own choices and priorities. It is our duty in our profession to inform parents and children about vaccines and other medical interventions, if not we breach our professional ethic principals.
