Sammanfattning

The development of fluconazole-resistant Candida species is considered as serious as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Therefore, it is important only to initiate antimycotic therapy when oral fungal infection is verified. In order to achieve the best treatment outcome, it is important that patient and infection specific factors are included in the treatment strategy. Systemic and local conditions of the patient may interfere with the homeostasis between bacteria and yeasts, causing the yeasts to become pathogenic and cause infection, diagnosed as oral candidosis. The condition can be painful and is often accompanied by characteristic clinical changes. Treatment measures seeking restoration of homeostasis in the oral microbiota together with targeted antimycotic treatment is the primary treatment strategy for the dentist in the management of patients with oral candidosis. Furthermore, the dentist must be aware of any risk of serious drug interactions in relation to azole treatment.
