Sammanfattning

In the northern countries, approximately 11,000 cases of hematological cancer (lymphoma, leukemia and multiple myeloma) are diagnosed annually. The standard of care consists of chemotherapy, which acts systemically and possesses a high risk of side effects, e.g. diarrhea and oral mucositis. Oral mucositis is an inflammation of the oral mucous membrane and despite being acknowledged as one of the worst side effects of cancer treatment, an effective and well tolerated preventive treatment strategy is still lacking. However, in recent years, research within the field of medical technology aiming at prevention of oral mucositis has made progress and demonstrated promising results.
