Sammanfattning

This paper examines experiences of medical simulation at three emergency units within mental health care. Using a phenomenological-hermeneutical approach and a descriptive and exploratory design, focus group interviews were conducted in order to examine the staff’s experiences with simulation training. Results show that staff experience medical simulation as useful for improving their clinical skills. At the same time, learning depends on whether participants feel comfortable in the training situation, and whether training has a professional quality which challenges the participants in their habitual patterns of action. Participants are usually milieu therapists, while doctors and psychologists rarely participate. Some participants found this problematic, pointing to an ideal of interdisciplinary practice. Others experienced more freedom in the training situation in the absence of physicians and psychologists. User experiences were insufficiently integrated in the simulation training. The study concludes that what is considered «best practice» must challenge current clinical work and expand staff competence if medical simulation is to improve patients’ treatment options. In this work, the manager has a main responsibility.
