Treatment of oral bacterial infections with local antibiotics should be used as little as possible and only on strict indications. Indications for topical use of
antibiotics in dentistry are rare. For local treatment of oral fungal infections, nystatin is the drug of choice. In severe fungal infections and in immune-compromised patients in particular, systemic treatment with fl uconazole is recommended. In most cases, such as infections in periodontal pockets, peri-implantitis sites and in root canals, chemo-mechanical treatment is more eff ective than local treatment with antibiotics.
