Sammanfattning
Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the experiences of first-time parents in their interaction with health care professionals in the transition between the postnatal ward and the child health care. Method: An ethnographic approach was used to explore three couples’ experiences and interactions with health care professionals before and after discharge from the postnatal ward. The materiel was analysed using Spradley´s method. Conclusion: The results showed that first time parents attach great importance to postnatal hospital stay, as it allowed them the opportunity to explore their new role as parents in a safe environment and to be together as a family. A set time frame for the length of stay was not necessary. Instead, an individual approach was appreciated. Information and guidance from health care professionals are deemed important and valuable by the couples. Some families valued consistent information, while others stress the benefits of different guidance approaches from different health care professional. Validation that their baby was growing as expected, was valued. Using Meleis’ Transition Theory, it was lastly discussed how cultural norms and institutional practices can be central to the couples’ experiences and expectations in the early postnatal period.
