Sammanfattning

Intimate partner femicide is an extreme form of violence in close relationships. Children who experience that their father kills their mother are exposed to a change of life situation that often also deprives them of both their parents. What are the long-term effects of the experience? 494 children who were exposed to this trauma during 1973-2009 were studied in national registers. 13 % of the children exposed before the age of 18 years old were subjected to mental disorder. The risks were increased five to six times for severe mental disorder, as well as for substance use disorder and self-harm. If exposed after 18 years old there was an increased risk of suicide. The authors describe the need of psychosocial interventions by health care and social services.
