Sammanfattning

There is much research on maternal deaths within 42 days after birth, but long-term mortality has seldom been studied. A reason for this lack is the difficulty in combining data on reproduction and deaths. A Finnish database has been used to study the incidence of all violent deaths up to one year after the end of pregnancy. All deaths of 15-49-year-old Finnish women in the period 1987-94 (of which 3,163 were violent) were individually linked to registers containing information on pregnancy (the Medical Birth Register, the Abortion Register and the Hospital Discharge Register).
