Sammanfattning
This article summarises the literature on the prevalence of smoking during pregnancy, the complications associated with smoking, and the possibilities for intervention to stop smoking during pregnancy with a focus on specifically Danish issues. Based on data about the smoking habits of pregnant women in Aarhus, Denmark, the proportion of pregnant smokers has decreased considerably during the past decade. The results from several epidemiological studies suggest that smoking during pregnancy has a negative influence on the course of the pregnancy and on the infant's morbidity and survival. In the latest updated Cochrane Review it is concluded that smoking cessation programs in pregnancy appear to reduce smoking, low birth weight, and preterm delivery.
