Sammanfattning
Introduction: Fine-needle aspiration is often the only procedure employed when examining focal lesions in the liver. This procedure is generally limited to the diagnostic statement: benign vs. malignant. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of needle biopsy for histological examination of such focal lesions. Materials and methods: A retrospective study of consecutive biopsies from the liver in cases where imaging techniques had shown that a tumour or focal process was performed. Results: Biopsies from and journals of 117 patients were evaluated. In cases with known primary tumour (n = 46) and suspicion of liver metastasis, another primary tumour was found in six patients (13%), and an additional five patients had benign lesions in the liver. When the site of the primary tumour was unknown (n = 71), the histological and immunohistochemical pattern was so inconclusive as to indicate the relevant focus in only four cases (6%). Discussion: In cases with image-verified liver processes, regardless of whether a known tumour was previously shown, a biopsy for histological evaluation instead of fine-needle aspiration is recommended.
