Sammanfattning

Incisional biopsy of a pigmented tumour, which on histopathological examination showed to be a malignant melanoma, has been regarded as a procedural error. This metanalysis, based on published studies, shows that there is no increased risk of metastasis after incisional biopsy of a malignant melanoma. The optimal treatment procedure for a pigmented tumour suspected to be a malignant melanoma includes complete excision in order to have the lesion »in toto« for optimal histopathological examination. However, if tumour size and location make total excision complicated, incisional biopsy can be performed.
