Sammanfattning

In a study conducted at the Department of infectious diseases at Örebro University Hospital in 2008, the body temperature of 52 patients was measured (altogether 364 measurements). Two types of infrared thermometers for cutaneous use (Thermofocus and IR Forehead) and an electronic axillary thermometer were tested. An electronic rectal thermometer was used for comparison. The repeatability of consecutive measurements with the cutaneous infrared thermometers was good with an intra class correlation (ICC) value of 0.98 and 0.84 respectively while the axillary thermometer showed an ICC value of 0.86. The ICC value should be as close to 1 as possible for the best correlation. The agreement with rectal temperature, however, was poor with ICC values of 0.02 and -0.08 for the two infrared thermometers and 0.23 for the axillary thermometer. We do not recommend the use of either of these instruments.
