Sammanfattning
Introduction: Actual knowledge about general practitioners' (GPs') continuing medical education (CME) offers is limited. The aim of this study was to elucidate what CME offers GPs in the county of Aarhus received during the course of one year with regard to topics and sponsorships. Materials and methods: All 414 GPs in the county were invited to submit a copy of all received CME offers, or fill in a chart with all the details, once a month during the course of one year (1998-1999). Results: A total of 147 GPs (36%) participated in the study. They submitted information on 7452 CME offers. The GPs received on average 66 CME offers during the year. Five GPs received more than 100. A total of 78% of the CME offers came from the pharmaceutical industry. The topic of cardiovascular diseases accounted for the biggest share (16%), followed by respiratory diseases (10%) and musculoskeletal diseases (9%). MSD, Pfizer and Bristol-Myers Squibb were the most frequent course providers among the pharmaceutical companies. In relation to the contact pattern/reason for encounter in general practice, the small specialties (ear, nose and throat; eyes; and blood and skin diseases) were underrepresented in the CME offers. Discussion: The statistics show that the CME activities for the participating GPs in the county are, to a great extent, influenced by the pharmaceutical industry's offers, and mainly within the field of newly developed drugs.
