Sammanfattning

Background and purpose: Living with an incurable disease will cause physical and mental challenges in a progressing disease. The aim of this study was to elucidate seriously ill persons’ experiences with participation in a support group, led by volunteers. Methods: The study had a qualitative approach. Individual interviews were conducted with seriously ill persons living in their own home. Findings: Participation in a support group led by volunteers was perceived as positive by seriously ill persons. The volunteers were perceived as safe, trustworthy and suitable persons leading the group. It was important to have mutual trust and confidence. Sharing their own and others' experiences gave a sense of togetherness and community that contributed to easier coping with problems and challenges caused by the disease. Conclusions: A support group led by volunteers can provide vital backing and help for people with serious sickness. Establishing a trusted community gave the members a feeling of confidence to disclose personal issues and problems, where the understanding and empathy that can be experienced by peers in the group can contribute to empowerment and self-efficacy in coping with the challenges caused by the disease.
