Sammanfattning
Research has indicated that patients
prefer to be cared for by a
nurse of the same sex, particularly
in intimate care. This could
mean that patients are often
cared for by a nurse who causes
them embarrassment. In order to
better understand patients’ preference
for female or male nurses it
may be useful for student nurses
to be aware of their personal attitude
regarding being cared for by
a man or a woman. The aim of
this study was to illuminate if student
nurses’ sexual orientation
influenced their personal preference
for male or female nurses.
Purposive sampling was used to
find out if their attitude regarding
preference had to do with age or
other experiences. An investigation
pertaining to this and answered
by 269 students, has been
carried out among student nurses.
The result shows that women
opted for a nurse of the same sex,
while men did not find the nurse’s
sex important. This could mean
that patients’ preference for a
nurse of the same sex depends on
if they personally feel embarrassed
about being cared for by a
nurse of the opposite sex, or if
indeed they had taken for granted
that the nurse would be a woman.
