Sammanfattning

In the rapidly changing «late» modern society traditional norms, ideals and values have lost their position as self-evident horizons of meaning. The understanding of the self, the constitution of one’s own personality has become a central question. There is no generally accepted way to theoretically approach the nature of the self. The tradition of developmental psychology offers a view where the harmonious development of the self is based on continuity and enduring values. Other theories emphasize the deep, changing and multiple self which is based on values and personal narratives. The theories do not however analyze the changes in the nature of the self any closer. A central question concerns the self in the process of change. What happens in life crises? How will the nature of the self change if the continuity is disrupted, the integration dissolves and the solidarity vanishes? The empirical data of the study are based on narratives of eighteen women who have been ill with breast cancer. The questions considered are: How has the illness influenced their lives, their personality, their life choices and values?
