Sammanfattning

Today’s lifestyle promotes an increase of the acidic challenge to the dentition, and thereby introduces a new risk factor for dental health. While the rise in soft drink consumption, especially among children and young people, is one of the most important lifestyle changes promoting dental erosion, the increasing prevalence of diseases resulting in stomach acid reaching the mouth and the dentition is another. Until recently there has been a paucity of epidemiological data on dental erosion in the literature. Today studies from many countries have confirmed that dental erosion is common among children and youths and that the progression of the lesions is fast. At this point there are no epidemiological studies from Sweden or Norway. Dental erosion has a multitude of etiological, aggravating, and modifying factors. At a community level, information campaigns related to life style factors and its implication for dental erosion and oral health must be launched.
