Sammanfattning

The article presents the results relating to underweight of a one-year prospective survey of the state of nutrition, health, function and well-being of 441 residents over age 65 at 11 nursing homes in Denmark. The main result shows that underweight is still a major problem among elderly nursing home residents, and that the incidence of hospitalisation, acute infection and low social involvement increases, the greater the number of underweight residents. Another, more positive result is that some departments have no underweight residents at all. In conclusion, there is a need for an active, goal-directed effort to secure a satisfactory state of nutrition among elderly nursing home patients, and the relationship between underweight, care and environment is in need of examination.
