A humanistic approach to the concept of evidence is necessary if respect for the values and experiences of individuals is to be part of the clinical decision-making process. An approach in which evidence is not an aim in its own right. Instruction in thinking and method related to an open concept of evidence in literature searching and critical appraisal of scientific articles raises new research issues based on the way problems present themselves in clinical nursing. Nurses thus experience optimum professional sparring and enter into both single- and multiple-disciplinary discussions in a more qualified manner on the basis of research-based knowledge. At the same time, the focus is concentrated more on professional judgement and the perspective of the patient.
