Sammanfattning
Admission of a psychiatric patient to a secure ward requires his or her voluntary consent, since such admissions are not regulated by legislation. The article highlights how vital it is that staff treating psychiatric patients are well trained in communication and patient relations. A good relationship with a patient makes it possible to analyse and interpret the patient's condition, as well as to deal with his or her defence mechanisms. Proper communication enables staff to deliberately work on different aspects of the dialogue so as to minimise conflict and the use of compulsion. Together, knowledge and practical experience of relationships and communication constitute the fulcrum of successful admission to secure wards of psychiatric patients with a view to re-establishing the patients' autonomy.
