Sammanfattning

Dental patients are at risk of eye injuries during dental procedures and in handling orthodontic appliences. In routine procedures foreign bodies may hit the patients’ eyes, and instrumentes and chemicals may be dropped by the personnel. Serious cases are extremely rare, but the risk is permanently present. A number of serious eye injuries, resulting in blindness and enucleation of eyes, are reported among children and adolescents wearing orthodontic headgears following accidental or incorrect removal or release during sleep. Far from all dentists protect their patients’ eyes during treatment procedures, and many even ask the patients to remove glasses. Hopefully, focus on the risk of eye injuries from headgear and modifications of the applicances will reduce the number of tragic eye injuries to children in the future.
