Sammanfattning
The article is based on results of the author's study of factors significant to the effect of guidance to individuals with a short formal education about quitting smoking. The method used involves interviews with 23 smokers with short formal educations with smoking-related illnesses admitted to three different medical wards. Analysis of the interviews was inspired by Giorgi's phenomenological analysis method.
The results show that the patients clam up during interviews related to smoking if they feel that their own views and perspectives on smoking are not heard and considered. They would also like to know more about their illnesses and how various risk factors can influence their condition. However, barriers relating to guidance on smoking and quitting the habit conditional on social inequality cannot be broken down purely by means of better communication. Other necessary elements include management backing related to clear guidelines for staff interviews with patients regarding smoking, information about the issue and actual referral to help in quitting smoking, as well as more time and space for patient instruction.
