Sammanfattning
Changes in atmospheric pressure can cause pain that dentists should be aware of. Barodontalgia is defined as toothache or pain arising from changes in atmospheric pressure, whereas barotrauma is a term used to describe progression of disease caused by pressure changes. Pre-existing inflammation in the dental pulp, defect fillings or untreated caries are assumed to be a prerequisite for barodontalgia or barotraumas in teeth and supporting tissues. The dentist should be familiar with barodontalgia and barotraumas as phenomena in order to diagnose these conditions and to perform appropriate treatment if necessary. This overview highlights aspects connected to tooth pain and problems that may arise as a result of high and low pressure. These problems are usually caused by diving or under conditions with low pressure such as flying or stay in high altitudes.
