Sammanfattning
Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a common finding in the population which frequently causes pronounced problems for both the patient as well as for the family. OSAS may lead to serious somatic complications and in cases of severe sleep apnea, first treatment of choice should be CPAP/BiPAP. In social snoring and milder cases of sleep apnea, surgical treatment has often been used in Norway and in many other countries. There is, however, no evidence for the efficacy of surgical treatment more than that persistent adverse effects occur in 50?-?60??% of the patients. Dental snoring appliances (Mandibular Repositioning Appliances - MRAs) are seldom used in Norway while approximately 13 000 appliances are performed yearly in Sweden. The indications for MRAs are social snoring and mild to moderate OSAS and the effect on subjective and objective sleep parameters are often satisfactory. This paper provides a short background on symptomatology, epidemiology, examination and treatment of sleep apnea and snoring with special emphasis on the use of MRAs.
