Sammanfattning

The first Trøndelag oral health survey in Norway was part of the WHO-International Collaborative Study in 1973 (WHO ICS-I). Since then three more surveys have been carried out, the most recent in October-November 2006. Nord-Trøndelag is a county in the middle of Norway comprising about 129 000 inhabitants. The purpose of the surveys has been to describe the development in oral health in different birth-cohorts from 1973 to 2006 and to examine changes in social inequality in oral health. Random samples from the same birth-cohorts were drawn each time, in addition to new cohorts of 35?--44 year olds in four municipalities in Nord-Trøndelag. Altogether approximately 4000 persons have participated in this part of the survey. The average number of decayed teeth more than halved from 1973 to 2006. It is interesting to note that the median DT was zero each study year. The 35?-?44 year olds had less than half the number of DMFS in 2006 than 35?-?44 years olds had in 1983. There was an overall improvement in oral health in the period that affected all social status groups. The results showed that for each decade the new 35?-?44 year olds had better oral health and less social inequality. As the birth-cohorts grew older there was a slight increase in average number of DMFT and DMFT.
